“Carriage Thirteen” is about stepping onto a night train and slowly realising that the journey is no longer behaving like the real world. Cities appear in reflections before the train reaches them, passengers seem to know things they shouldn’t, locked doors open the wrong way, and Violet’s own reflection begins acting independently. What starts as glamorous European travel gradually turns into something dreamlike and unsettling. At the centre of the song is the idea of meeting the version of yourself who took a different path. When Violet finally reaches her compartment and finds another version of herself already there, the journey becomes less about geography and more about identity, choice and escape. By the end, it’s deliberately unclear which Violet has returned to London, and which one has been left travelling somewhere else.
